The L68A1 is a standard L20A4 UGM that has a stainless steel mounting spigot secured by screws to the interface flange on the underside of the mount and a shield support that is secured by six screws to the front of the mount. A one piece ballistic shield is attached to the support arm for the protection of the gunner.

This configuration is used on the Force Protection MASTIFF Protected Patrol Vehicle. Due to the restrictions imposed by the gunners ballistic shield the L68A1 will only accept the following weapons and their buffered mounts:

  •                 Machine Gun 7.62mm L7A2 (GPMG)
  •                 Machine Gun .50in L111A1 (QCB)
  •                 Machine Gun 40mm L134A1 (GMG)

The firing arcs of the UGM in elevation and traverse are unaffected by the addition of the spigot, shield support and gunners shield.

*Note 1. The maximum elevation and depression detailed above is the limit of the UGM control arm imposed by the quadrant in the elevation brake plates. In practice, the maximum elevation and depression will be less than quoted, dependant on the type of weapon and soft mount fitted. The depression of the weapon may well be limited by the barrel of the weapon or its soft mount coming into contact with features such as a front ballistic shield or the vehicle superstructure. Further limitations include the practicable ability of the gunner being able to view the target area through the sights.
